week 7

Square Peg in a Round Hole

Week 7 at Burke’s Grill has FLOWN by.  I swear I think that Friday was the shortest day EVER.  I mean seriously, it seemed like I remember looking at the clock when we left the house and it wasn’t even 9:00 yet so we were at the restaurant by 9 and the next thing I knew I was looking at my watch when the health inspector left and it was 4:00 p.m.  I had no idea where the day went!

The whole week pretty much went like that.  On the one hand it seems like we got nothing done but we actually go SO much done.  We had a deadline of Tuesday to get the final health inspection done in order to get our beer/wine license by the time we open on May 1st but there were a couple of little items we had to get done before the…

week 6

Square Peg in a Round Hole

My big plan was to have everything finished this past week except for some very minor stuff so that we could spend the next week cleaning and then have our pre-opening party on the 22nd and then open to the public on the 24th. Looks like a monkey wrench got thrown into those plans.

The good news is we are only getting held up a week.  The bad news is that due to unforeseen occurences we can’t open until May 1.  We will be “ready” to open on the 24th but aren’t allowed to.  I am not allowed to talk about the specifics but let’s just say that as soon as permissible we will be open and ready for business.

Enough on the negative. Let’s focus on the positive!  This past week I felt like I was at once stagnating in a muddy pool of hurry up and…

Week 5

Square Peg in a Round Hole

So I know I keep saying 2 week but then something comes up and it puts it off for another week.    This last week has been just as busy as ever even though it seems like we aren’t getting a lot done, I guess in reality we are.

This week our menu covers came in.  Now we just have to get the menus done.  Gotta come up with some “catchy” names for all our grub and figure out price points.  We also have to figure out what items we are going to have on our permanent menu and what items will be “specials”.  I’m not sure if I explained how we are planning on working this menu thing.

Dwight’s vision has always been that he wants our place to be somewhere that if a single person or young couple wanted to come in every day that we are open and…

week 4

Square Peg in a Round Hole

This week – I can’t believe it’s been 4 weeks already –  seemed like it was just as busy as every other week but sitting down and thinking about things it’s hard to remember what we did without everything kind of melding together.  I think it’s that we had so much other stuff going on too, besides the restaurant, that it just seemed like we never stopped all week long!

Besides the “work” stuff we also snuck in our daughter’s best friend’s 21st birthday celebration so that kind of took up a whole evening (not that I minded… mention margaritas and I am THERE).  Plus I got to throw in a nice girl’s day out lunch with some friends whom I hadn’t seen in a while. It was much needed and very much enjoyed and then I got to give them a tour of the restaurant.

I think the…

Week 3

Square Peg in a Round Hole

This week at Burke’s Grill things kind of slowed down for me.  A couple of days Dwight was there with the painters and stuff and I got to stay home and work on my class work.  Sometimes I think I’d rather have been at the restaurant!

This past week we DID get out cooler delivered.  We were really surprised because first off they were supposed to call before they were going to deliver it (our understanding was they would call the night before) and since we had just ordered it the Friday before we thought it would be a good week before it came but low and behold, we were there late Tuesday afternoon when Dwight’s cell phone rang and it was the truck driver that was delivering the cooler and he was just right up the road from us!  Seriously?  It only took essentially 2 business days to come…

Week 2

Square Peg in a Round Hole

This week has been almost a blur.  We got so much stuff done but I seem to forget what we actually did the week before and what we did this past week!  I know we got our FaceBook page set up so please go and like us now.  Now, please!  Here’s the link:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Burkes-Grill/389345751095273   I’ll wait until you get back.  . . . . . . . . . .

Oh, are you back?  See that wasn’t hard, was it?  We are going to try to update pictures of the progress as we go along.  Once we get open we will use the page to inform our customers of the menu as it will change daily!  We will have a small set menu but since we will do a meat and 2 or 3 veggies for lunch every day we will post what the meat choices and veggie choices…

Our first official week creating Burke’s Grill!

Square Peg in a Round Hole

This has been another very busy week for us.  I know I promised to keep you guys up to date on our progress for the restaurant and I am going to try to set up a separate blog for the restaurant but I haven’t had time yet.  I’m also going to try to set that up and our Facebook page this week.  It’s just been SO busy!

We spent a lot of time this week in restaurant equipment places.  Some of them were nice, some not so nice and some down right NASTY.  There was one that we went to that when we left, I wanted to take a shower in germicide.  It gave me the heebie jeebies!  But… I digress….

First things… we did finally decide on a name. I think we are just going to simplify and go with Burke’s Grill.  That way people will know it’s us…

I’m re-posting the posts I had on my personal blog here so that you can follow along with our progress in creating Burke’s Grill. This is the first post unveiling our plans. It was posted March 5, 2012.

Square Peg in a Round Hole

It’s official (I think) so I can finally talk about it.  A couple of weeks ago hubby had a little more of the corporate world than he could stand so he quit his job.  He had been sort of miserable (okay.,.. a LOT miserable) for a LONG time so this had been a long time coming.  And more and more lately I had been hearing him say to people how his lifelong dream was to own his own restaurant. SO…. it’s official…. We are opening a restaurant!

I think I may be more excited than he is!  I find myself waking up early just because I am so excited I can’t sleep!  I am excited for him and I’m excited for myself and I’m excited for us to be embarking on this new chapter in our lives together.  WE are going to own a restaurant.  Not just him. Not just…
